Jill Carver Brush Set

Now residing in the former mining hamlet of Rico, in the San Juan mountains of Colorado, Jill Carver has been immersed in painting the West for the past 22 years. Her work explores the line between representational and abstracted styles, and with a background in art history - having worked formerly as a curatorial research assistant in London’s National Portrait Gallery for 11 years - she brings a unique and fresh vision to the genre of Western landscape painting. Jill has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, Plein Air Magazine, Art of the West, and Western Art and Architecture. She has participated in premier annual shows such as The Coors and The Bighorn Rendezvous. In 2014, Jill won the Gold Medal (Artists’ Choice) for Best in Show at Maynard Dixon Country and in the same year was inaugurated as Signature Member in ‘Plein Air Painters of America’. She is a popular and highly regarded teacher.

The Jill Carver Brush set is a compilation of my favorite Rosemary&Co brushes for both my plein air and studio work.

Series 2035. Chungking Pointed Round / Series 2045. Chungking Filbert / Series 2065. Extra Long Filbert

If, like me, you enjoy both the juicy viscosity of oil paint and direct dynamic brushwork, then traditional bristle brushes are your go-to brush of choice. The Chungking brushes included here provide top-notch quality bristle combined with a delicious variety of mark-making through each of the various profiles: round, filbert and extra-long filberts. A No. 8 extra-long filbert is the brush I reach for first, whether it be plein air or studio work. Load it up! I always have a handful of these on the go during any painting session.

I clean and condition my bristle brushes once a week, and they last forever!

Ivory Long Flats

As someone who has always chosen traditional bristle or natural hair brushes, the capability of the synthetic Ivory series blew me away. The long flats allow you to load a very full brush, and they have a wonderful amount of spring-like flex to them, yet they hold their shape extremely well. The Ivory Long Flats are particularly useful for square edges, straight lines, or architectural elements. I also use them for doing fast studies or test pieces in the studio when I want to keep each shape of color I lay down separate and clean. They allow for great dexterity and control.

Mundy Mop / Mundy Bristle Blender

I love the soft mark making from a mop style brush. Though the Mundy Mop is designed as a blender, I often use it to block in on large studio paintings that require several layers of work. The mops allow me to cover the canvas without leaving any surface texture which is useful for coming back in with thicker bristle brushwork on top. I tend to be rather rough on my Mundy Mops, and the goat hair takes a beating. Though I turn these brushes turn into angular chisel heads over time, I love them that way too! I’ve added the Bristle Blender Mop to this set for those who are likewise hard on their goat hair mops!

Series 278. Masters Choice Long Filbert

This soft yet responsive badger hair brush is great for passages where you want less texture. Badger hair is more robust than goat hair, and I have yet to wear one down! Certainly when working in layers in the studio, I have learned that having softer brushes available - to start and end on a painting - is extremely beneficial.
